There I stood, in front of the magnificent Sardar Sarovar Dam, but instead of appreciating the beauty of the elegant structure, I was distracted by the shattered rooftops at the periphery. My brain was curious to know what scars this structure had left on the settlement it imposed upon.
After speaking with the villagers, I decided to conduct field research through which I documented every aspect of their lives that may have been altered by this development. The effects of the rehabilitation ranged from the loss of traditional farming methods and cultural practices to the overall standards of education and healthcare.
Learning about their development induced sacrifices and having a chance to present them as a model for future development projects was a fulfilling experience marked with personal growth. I look forward to similar opportunities at Harvard through its BLISS program, active faculty, and outstanding undergraduate research.
