When working in care

When working in care, the ambition should be to give the best standard of care to the service user, but however occasionally there can be struggles between individual’s or their family’s wishes and rights and the duty of care towards them. Example of conflicts that could arise, if an individual has learning disability, and finds out she is pregnant and wants to have a termination. She asks her support worker to accompany her to the hospital. Her support worker holds religious beliefs that do not agree with terminations. However, the support worker should not refuse to go as its not his/her right to do so also mixing personal matters with profession is not allowed. The Human Rights act also allows her to make her own choices as she has “A Right to choice” and sets out the fundamental rights and freedoms that she and everyone in the UK is entitled to.
